One of the hardiest of the scheffleras that have come into cultivation recently (along with fengii and taiwaniana). Native to the temperate forests of south-central and eastern China, this species has proven to be remarkably hardy, having survived undamaged for many years now in numerous gardens in the Pacific NW. The very large palmate leaves are on three-foot-long petioles and have five individual leaflets - each of which can grow to twenty inches in length - one of the largest leaves of any temperate woody plant. Absolutely massive umbels of small flowers in the autumn followed by purple-black berries.
