This is a large and vigorous, upright evergreen shrub with smooth, bright green foliage. The large and showy fragrant flowers are white flushed pink to deep pink in mid- to late spring, providing a grand display. This is an easily grown, floriferous garden plant with heat and cold tolerance. One of the best all-around species for gardens. These are grown from seed collected in the wild in a newly explored region. Nice large specimens!
Large shrubs closely allied to the familiar calophytum with similar very large leaves but slightly different in shape and with a shiny upper leaf surface. The early spring flowers differ from those of calophytum in their slightly different shape, and in the fact that they are a solid pinkish-purple in color. Quite rare in the wild, two separate expeditions have failed to locate this species in the Jinggang Shan of western Jiangxi where it is thought to be endemic. This appears to be an isolated, far eastern extension of the calophytum complex. Grown from hand-pollinated seed produced here in the RSBG. Massive leaves on these beautiful specimens.
A newly introduced species with very attractive, smooth and glossy, olive-green foliage and stunning rose-purple flowers in mid-spring. Each flower is highlighted by a large starry reddish-purple calyx. Very striking and quite distinct. Easy in light shade and seems to be quite hardy. The new growth of this species is particularly attractive. This offering has been grown from hand-pollinated seed produced here at the RSBG.
A newly introduced species forming large, upright-growing shrubs with spectacular foliage and flowers. The very large and fragrant flowers are white to pink and occur in impressive inflorescences of up to 18 flowers in early summer. These showy blossoms are followed by vigorous new growth with attractive large leaves. Fine in sun or shade, the foliage will be much larger in the shade. A strong-growing, adaptable garden plant. These are grown from seed collected in the wild.
This is one of the finest species in cultivation. These are seedlings grown from seed collected in the wild and this collection features very attractive glaucous-blue foliage. Always reliable, free-blooming, and like all trifloras, does not need to be dead-headed. Pinkish to lavender flowers in mid- to late spring. Easy to grow and best in light shade. Nice large plants.
An impressive species that was only recently introduced into cultivation. Closely related to floribundum but with a darker fuzzy indumentum and pink to wine-red flowers (vs. purplish) in mid-spring. An easily grown, strong upright grower with really stunning, glossy and bullate, deep green leaves. Very attractive and best grown in light shade or the woodland garden.
