One of the finest species in the genus. In early spring, the stunning scarlet flowers with black nectar pouches are framed by a whorl of deep green lanceolate leaves with bristly petioles. A superb foliage plant with equally impressive flowers. This species is best in light shade with good drainage. These are grown from a hand-pollination between two plants grown from collections in the wild. These new collections (modern era) have larger leaves and flowers than the older forms that have been in cultivation for over a hundred years.
