Formerly known as Menziesia ferruginea, this deciduous species is native to forests in northwestern North America. The former genus Menziesia was recently “lumped” into the genus Rhododendron based upon DNA studies but the two genera are quite different morphologically – at least floristically. This species features oval leaves that are somewhat glandular and hairy with decent fall color if grown in a bright enough location. The small, bell-shaped flowers are in pendant, loose clusters and range in color from rusty orange to cream, pinkish or yellowish. Best in light shade and tolerant of some dryness in the summer once established. Grown from seed collected wild by RSBG staff on the Olympic Peninsula, WA.
