This is a cross of two fantastic big leaf species with cream to yellow flowers. R. sinofalconeri is one of the hardiest and most easily grown of the big-leaf species and has a vigorous growth habit. R. macabeanum NAPE#052 is what we call the "alpine macabeanum" because it was found growing at an altitude 3000 ft. higher than its normal range. Please send us pictures when it flowers. These should be among the hardiest and most vigorous of all the big-leaves.
Large rounded to upright evergreen shrubs or trees with stiff lanceolate foliage. This variety has very dark, reddish-brown indumentum on the undersides of the leaves. The flowers (mid- to late spring) are white, pink, carmine or red. Found at higher elevations than ssp. arboreum and thus generally hardier. An impressive plant in both foliage and flower. Strong growing with a tree-like or large bushy habit. I have not documented the flower color on this clone which was collected wild in Nepal. This selection has the darkest indumentum of any arboreum in our large collection of this variable species - stunning.
A big-leaf species that is more shrub-like than tree-like, this has thick and wooly reddish-brown indumentum on the undersides of the leaves. Smooth and peeling red-brown bark. Grown from seeds produced by a hand pollination here at the garden. Beautiful bark and foliage with cream to deep pink flowers in early spring.
A relatively newly introduced species that forms a very large specimen shrub with very large leaves and white flushed rose to solid pink flowers, often with a dark red basal blotch. Closely related to the familiar calophytum but with even larger and more impressive foliage. Curator, Steve Hootman remembers climbing a 30 ft. tree of this species in a remote ravine in western China and looking out over stands of the species huanum, ochraceum, lutescens, ririei, etc. – a remarkable setting for a remarkable species. Easy and very attractive in light shade.
