The Pilger Podocarp is an extremely variable and widespread conifer. It is native to mountains throughout southeastern Asia - ranging from southern China south into New Guinea. This variable species can be shrubby or a very large tree and shows tremendous variation in leaf morphology, etc. The form we grow (considered to be P. wangii in the Flora of China) is from our collection on the China/Vietnam frontier and features very short, narrowly elliptic leaves up to only 1.5 inches in length which gives it a very “non-coniferous” look. The trees in that region were virgin old-growth and up to about 50 ft. in height. This collection was undamaged in the garden by temperatures of 12F (–11°C) and so shows some inherent hardiness for what is a mostly tropical species. Our first offering.

A tall-growing and climbing species of Solomon’s Seal, this species can attain heights of 10-12 feet in a rich soil with summer irrigation. The flowers hang in clusters from the axils of the long and narrow, whorled leaves. These are followed by red berries. Perfect planted under large rhododendrons or other shrubs or small trees as the long stems of the Solomon’s Seal will appreciate the support provided by their woody neighbors.
