A deciduous tree native to northern Vietnam that is now very rare in the wild. This forms a fine specimen with finely textured palmate foliage and terminal erect racemes of white flowers pollinated by swallowtail butterflies. The resulting fruits ("conkers") are the size of a softball. Fall foliage color varies from golden to bronze and russet tones. A rare opportunity, best in sun.
A newly introduced species forming large, upright-growing shrubs with spectacular foliage and flowers. The very large and fragrant flowers are white to pink and occur in impressive inflorescences of up to 18 flowers in early summer. These showy blossoms are followed by vigorous new growth with attractive large leaves. Fine in sun or shade, the foliage will be much larger in the shade. A strong-growing, adaptable garden plant. These are grown from seed collected in the wild.
An impressive species that was only recently introduced into cultivation. Closely related to floribundum but with a darker fuzzy indumentum and pink to wine-red flowers (vs. purplish) in mid-spring. An easily grown, strong upright grower with really stunning, glossy and bullate, deep green leaves. Very attractive and best grown in light shade or the woodland garden.
Large and wide-spreading but upright evergreen shrubs or small trees. A fantastic species, one of the last to bloom here in the garden (late July or early August), with large leaves and showy white (rarely pink), highly fragrant flowers. Because this species occurs in a more climatically continental region of China than most other species with large leaves, it is more tolerant of heat and cold extremes. Grown from seed collected in a newly explored region far to the south of where this species has been recorded previously - a real surprise. Stunning foliage on this collection, the leaves are enormous!
This is a newly introduced collection from northern Vietnam perhaps most closely related to glanduliferum but found far to the south of the known range of that species. Similar large and glossy foliage and fragrant white flowers in early summer. This is a strong-growing, ultimately very large plant. A beautiful foliage plant. Our first offering of this new introduction, might be named as a new species.
