Rhododendron cardiobasis (ex. CGG#14165)

A newly introduced species and one of the most important introductions in the last twenty years. This species forms a rounded shrub with large and deep green, very rounded leaves – a stunning plant in foliage. In mid-spring the large flower buds expand to upright inflorescences of 18 (or so) funnel-shaped and pink, lightly fragrant flowers (similar to those of its close relative – R. fortunei) - quite remarkable. Grown from hand-pollinated seed produced here at the RSBG from the original introduction of this species from its type location in southern China. This taxon was long thought to be a subspecies of its relative R. orbiculare which also has rounded leaves, but which is found far to the northwest in Sichuan, and which has completely different flowers. I am hereby (unofficially) re-instating it as a distinct, separate species. Beautiful bluish cast to the new growth and a vigorous habit. Best in light shade and has been perfectly hardy outside here so far. You will love this.
