A Maddenia closely related to nuttallii but typically with narrower foliage that is more strongly glaucous-white beneath. Very large and fragrant white flowers with a strong yellow-orange blotch in mid-spring to early summer (depending upon the provenance). Smooth and peeling bark. One of the hardiest of the larger-flowered maddenias - has survived outdoors in the ground for many years at the RSBG. Requires excellent drainage. Grown from wild collected seed. This is the more “typical” form (if such a thing can be said about this enigmatic species) with very large leaves and blooming in early summer.
This very rare species (known from only two or three locations in the wild) is a member of subsection Fortunea. It has only recently been introduced into cultivation (2010) and is probably most closely related to hemsleyanum and the recently introduced serotinum and shares some of the same characteristics – large, fragrant white flowers, a large habit and impressively big and bold foliage. As seen in the wild, this was a spectacular plant with large elliptic leaves to ten inches or more in length. Probably best with a bit of shade in the afternoon to preserve the late-season flowers that appear in early autumn(!). Nice large plants.
A new introduction into cultivation. This species is an evergreen azalea native to a small area in southern Yunnan Province, China. It has attractive shiny and elliptic leaves that grow in pseudowhorls at the ends of the branches. The rose-purple flowers (early summer) are arranged in dense terminal clusters and have darker spots. An excellent new species with a dense and compact growth habit. Best in sun or light shade. These are grown from seed collected in the wild.
A newly introduced species forming large, upright-growing shrubs with spectacular foliage and flowers. The very large and fragrant flowers are white to pink and occur in impressive inflorescences of up to 18 flowers in early summer. These showy blossoms are followed by vigorous new growth with attractive large leaves. Fine in sun or shade, the foliage will be much larger in the shade. A strong-growing, adaptable garden plant. These are grown from seed collected in the wild.
This is a dwarf and mounding evergreen shrub from the subalpine slopes of the Himalaya Mts. It features fragrant glossy foliage with a pure white lower surface, smooth and peeling red-brown bark and pink bells in spring – very nice. From seed collected in the wild, this variety of this widespread Himalayan species is rarely seen in gardens. Sun or light shade. Fantastic bark and foliage on this choice species.
Dwarf mounding and compact evergreen shrubs with very small aromatic leaves. These are dark glossy green on the upper surface and covered with brown scales on the lower. The flowers (mid-spring) are violet or purple to lavender. Forms a very slow growing, fantastically textural dwarf mound of dark and glossy foliage. This represents the true impeditum vs. the glaucous blue-green leaved plant that is typically sold as this species. This collection from the wild (CCHH#8235) features incredibly tiny and narrow, deep green leaves, an amazing texture and appearance.
