COMPANION PLANTS

This is a recently introduced relatively large and bold member of the Gesneriaceae (African Violet family). This newly named species is native to limestone cliffs on Hainan Island, China. This is an evergreen herbaceous perennial with a basal rosette of softly hairy, very large and glossy leaves with scalloped margins and a very thick texture.  The flowers are borne upon a tall, open and upright panicle and are pink in color. A striking plant for a container, terrarium or shaded rockery. Our first offering of this eye-catching species.

This is an evergreen herbaceous perennial with a basal rosette of softly hairy, very large leaves with scalloped margins and on very short petioles so that the leaves all seem to arise from the very base of the plant.  The flowers are borne upon a tall, open and upright panicle and are a solid lavender in color. A striking plant for a container, terrarium or shaded rockery. 

This is a distinct species native to Guangxi, China where it grows on mossy cliffs and rock faces. This is an evergreen herbaceous perennial with a basal rosette of softly hairy, long and very narrow leaves with deeply impressed veins. Secondary rosettes of leaves are borne on spreading short stems so that the plant slowly creeps to form a dense mass. The flowers are borne on short stalks with lavender-blue lobes and a paler tube. A striking plant for a container, terrarium or shaded rockery. This taxon is known from only one small population in the wild and is considered critically endangered.

A rarely offered or cultivated hardy evergreen fern with softly hairy and entire (not "ferny") linear foliage. This is a slowly spreading species with elongating rhizomes that will form a small-scale groundcover with time. The fronds are very narrowly linear (almost grasslike) and less than one-quarter inch wide and three to four inches long. This species is native throughout much of China and into Taiwan, Japan and Thailand where it occurs on shaded and moist rock faces and as an epiphyte. A great specimen for container gardening, rarely available anywhere. A collection from SE Asia.

A rarely offered or cultivated hardy evergreen fern with softly hairy and entire (not "ferny") foliage. This is a slowly clumping species with shortly elongating rhizomes (vs. many of the other species of Pyrrosia which send out long runners) which will form a small-scale groundcover with time. The fronds are widest above the middle with a gradually narrowing base. This variable species ranges widely throughout most of China and Taiwan and into the eastern Himalaya where it occurs on shaded and moist rock faces and as an epiphyte. A great specimen for container gardening, rarely available anywhere. A collection from SE Asia.
