The Cinnamon Clethra is the southern Appalachian relative of the commonly cultivated Summersweet (Clethra alnifolia). This rarely grown deciduous shrub has similar panicles of fragrant white flowers in summer. Yellow fall foliage color. It also features glossy, smooth and peeling mahogany bark. Native to cliffs and mountainsides. Larger-growing than C. alnifolia. These are grown from seed collected wild in Kentucky.

This is a hybrid between two beautiful epiphytic species of orchids native to the temperate rainforests of the Himalaya Mountains (Coelogyne cristata x Coelogyne flaccida). Many of the species in this genus grow naturally in the wild alongside Rhododendron species and so this is a genus we feature in the Rutherford Conservatory, etc. as they benefit from the same temperature regimes as most of our rhododendrons (vs. truly tropical orchids which are more familiar and more widely grown - many Coelogyne are toleratant of cooler conditions). Rarely offered and easily grown. Typical orchid cultivation - moist but well-drained and great in a moss-lined or similar hanging basket to highlight the pendant growth habit (as illustrated here). These are large specimens that should bloom within a year.
