The flowers are quite large and an unusual reddish-brown in color, highlighted with green stripes - a really striking appearance! Excellent bright red fall foliage color when grown in sun. This species is native to southern Japan and is typically reddish-flowered, often with a greenish flush or base. A rare opportunity to grow this choice species. This plant grown from seed collected wild on Mt. Horaijisan, Aichi, Japan, at 565m. Our first offering.

This is an evergreen “tree heath,” which has a very interesting native range including southern Europe, North Africa, and into the foothills of the western Caucasus. Amazingly, it is also found in Abyssinia and on many of the higher mountains of eastern and central Africa (including Mt Kilimanjaro)! This forms an erect shrub or small tree with tiny linear leaves of deep glossy green. The small but quite fragrant white flowers appear in masses in mid-spring. This species has been cultivated here in the garden since 1994 and has never suffered any damage from cold temperatures. A beautiful and easily grown wild heath that deserves wider cultivation. 

A rarely offered broad-leaved evergreen tree with glossy toothed leaves. This slow-growing, rather narrow and columnar tree will top out around thirty or forty feet in time and is a classic component of the woodland and/or rhododendron garden offering large white flowers in mid- to late summer. Each flower has a mass of yellow stamens in the center. In the Pacific NW and similar climates this beautiful tree is best in full sun to light shade for optimal flowering.
