A beautiful evergreen dwarf rhododendron. This is a Glendoick Bird hybrid (racemosum x 'Snipe') with flowers of brightest pink in multiple trusses from the upper leaf axils in early spring. A fairly compact but upright grower with small medium-green leaves. Easy and floriferous. Best in sun.
This is one of the finest of the Glendoick Bird Hybrids. It is described on the Glendoick website as the first deep pink dwarf with significant scent suitable for growing outdoors at Glendoick (in eastern Scotland). It has small hairy and bullate foliage with beautiful flowers in mid-spring. A great new plant (edgeworthii x dendrocharis).
Another Glendoick hybrid in the “Bird Series”, this fine dwarf has a spreading and creeping habit with masses of pure white flowers which open over several weeks in early spring. This FCC plant is the result of leucaspis x orthocladum var. microleucum. Best in full sun or very light shade.
Another excellent Glendoick Bird hybrid (keiskei ‘Yaku Fairy’ x glaucophyllum). This very hardy dwarf selection has masses of bright red buds opening to deep reddish-pink flowers (quite red in appearance, which is something you rarely see in a dwarf lepidote rhododendron). Very free flowering and best in light shade. A floriferous and easily grown cultivar.
This is a selection from the cinnabarinum x maddenii complex of hybrids and is probably a selection from the ‘Royal Flush’ grex. A strong grower with very large flowers of pinkish red. Really stunning in flower.
A compact and mounding shrub with smooth, deep green and rounded leaves. A fine cross (forrestii x thomsonii) from the famous Royston Nursery (Mary and Ted Greig) on Vancouver Island. The bell-shaped flowers (mid-spring) are bright red.
A cultivar in the Lady Chamberlain grex (cinnabarinum Roylei Group x Royal Flush orange). This selection from Rothschild has the large tubular pendant flowers characteristic of this group, salmon pink in this instance. Basically, an easily grown and giant-flowered cinnabarinum.
A famous old British hybrid with striking blood-red waxy flowers in early to mid-spring. Dark green elliptic leaves on a tree-forming plant with beautiful smooth and peeling bark. This F1 hybrid (thomsonii x barbatum) was the highlight of the entire day during a recent visit to the famous Rhododendron collection at Muncaster Castle in northern England. Not widely available.
