A large-leafed hybrid from Glendoick. This is the result of the cross ‘Percy Wiseman’ x macabeanum. Large leaves with a thin indumentum beneath. Early-blooming with flowers pink in bud opening pale yellow and fading to cream with a suffusion of peach/melon and red spots – quite stunning.
These are seedlings grown from a hand-pollination done here at the RSBG utilizing the two best pink forms of the ‘Loderi’ grex. ‘Irene Stead’ is a fine solid pink New Zealand selection that does not fade to white as most ‘Loderi’ forms tend to do, and ‘Venus’ is considered by many to be the best of the more commonly grown pink forms. One would imagine these plants will turn out to be pretty good pink forms of ‘Loderi’—please let us know how your plant survives and what the flowers look like when it blooms. This macgregoriae hybrid features narrow glossy foliage with vivid orange-pink flowers. A relatively dense and compact grower.
This very fragrant hybrid deciduous azalea is most often seen listed as a selection of the species prinophyllum. While it probably does have a bit of that fine east coast native in its background, it most definitely is not a straight species. It is, however, a superb and floriferous garden plant with large pink flowers with a strong yellow flush. Easy in sun or light shade.
Another really terrific Glendoick dwarf hybrid (campylogynum (white form) x luteiflorum). This selection forms a compact mound with dark green foliage showing off the masses of pendant yellow bells in mid-spring. Looks like a larger growing form of campylogynum with yellow flowers – fantastic. Best in morning sun or light shade.
We can find very little information about this hybrid other than that it has glossy foliage and rose-purple flowers with narrow tubes.
A medium-growing hybrid with pinkish-purple flowers in mid to late spring. This plant is admired and grown for its strikingly variegated foliage with the green leaves boldly and broadly streaked with bright yellow. Easily grown and best in light shade to avoid foliar scorching.
A semi-dwarf hybrid (campylocarpum ssp. campylocarpum x williamsianum) that features rounded leaves and creamy-yellow flowers, sometimes flushed pink, in early spring. Sun tolerant and quite lovely with delicately colored flowers.
