These plants are the result of a natural hybridization occurrence in the wild. The seed was collected from plants of the newly described species R. yuanbaoshanense but the resulting plants are obviously "contaminated" by R. fortunei which was growing nearby. These are vigorous seedlings with rounded leaves and are very similar in appearance to the fantastic yuanbaoshanense but are just a bit "off" from what you would expect these plants to look like.
Stiffly upright shrubs with broadly lanceolate, rigid and shiny leaves. The showy white flowers (late spring) are almost flat in shape with reddish flecks. A distinct and easily grown species with unusual stiff foliage and saucer-shaped flowers late in the season. Known only from a few mountains in NE Yunnan where it occurs around 10,000 ft. Our first offering in many years.
A very rare species in cultivation, this is closely related to the more familiar glischrum, differing in its shorter foliar and stem hairs giving it a more “fuzzy” appearance. Pink to white flushed pink flowers, usually with red spots. Best in light shade. This offering has been grown from hand-pollinated seed produced here at the RSBG.
Our first offering of this rarely cultivated vireya (tropical) rhododendron. This distinct species features short and pointy, very glossy foliage, looking superficially like a short-needled conifer. The flowers are reddish (with a bit of orange), softly hairy, and pendant. This species is native to the mountains of Sumatra and was not introduced into cultivation until 1998. A choice addition to any vireya collection.
Compact to eventually quite large evergreen shrubs, remaining much smaller in cultivation. A variable, widespread and common species in the wild. The attractive foliage is covered with a pale spongy indumentum beneath. The flowers (mid-spring) are borne in a dense rounded inflorescence and vary in color from white to rose or deep pink, typically with numerous reddish spots. Rare in cultivation but a choice collector’s species. Best in light shade with excellent drainage. From wild collected seed.
