It is native to mountains throughout southeastern Asia - ranging from southern China south into New Guinea. This variable species can be shrubby or a very large tree and shows tremendous variation in leaf morphology, etc. The form we grow (considered to be P. wangii in the Flora of China) is from our collection on the China/Vietnam frontier and features very short, narrowly elliptic leaves up to only 1.5 inches in length which gives it a very “non-coniferous” look. The trees in that region were virgin old-growth and up to about 50 ft. in height. This collection was undamaged in the garden by temperatures of 12F (–11°C) and so shows some inherent hardiness for what is a mostly tropical species.
